Scotland fans plan minutes applause for fan who died after arriving in Boston

Scotland fans have planned to pay tribute to one of their long-serving supporters of the Tartan Army with a minute’s applause in their upcoming World Cup clash against Morocco on June 19 at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

After returning to the competition by concluding a 28-year wait, Scotland bagged a 1-0 victory over Haiti in their opening match on June 14.

Ivory Coast legend Yaya Touré once said, “I think football is more than a game; it is a passion. It is something that comes from inside and touches people’s hearts,” and the Tartan Army will be standing by it on Friday as they honour Donny Strathie.

Strathie, a 76-year-old Scotland fan from Grangemouth, passed away at the Boston Norwood Hampton Inn last Sunday before he could attend his first-ever World Cup game and support his nation.

Reports have suggested that Strathie was a lifelong, devoted Scotland supporter who had travelled extensively for friendlies and qualifiers in the past, and this time, he made the trip to Boston with friends and family members.

Now, his friends and family, along with the rest of the Tartan Army, have come together to pay tribute to Strathie with a minute’s applause in the 76th minute of the match against Morocco.

During his pre-match press conference, Scotland national team head coach Steve Clarke also paid tribute to Strathie and said,

“Among all the great news around the World Cup for Scotland this is obviously very sad. It’s sad for his family, his daughters and his grandchildren. I think Donny’s ambition was to see Scotland at a World Cup again.”

“Thankfully he managed to do that before he passed, but my thoughts and condolences are with his family,” Clarke concluded.

The Scotland national team also announced the plan to pay tribute to Strathie on their official social media accounts.
