Norway vs Iraq: World Cup betting preview

Norway begin their 2026 World Cup campaign against Iraq in Group I knowing that anything less than victory would be viewed as a major disappointment.

With France already securing three points against Senegal, the pressure is on Ståle Solbakken’s side to respond and keep pace with the tournament favourites.

Norway are appearing at their first World Cup since 1998 and arrive in North America carrying significant momentum. Led by superstar striker Erling Haaland and Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard, the Scandinavians possess arguably the strongest squad in their modern history.

The Norwegians were among Europe’s most impressive teams during qualification, scoring goals for fun and regularly overwhelming opponents with their attacking quality. Haaland remains the focal point, but the likes of Alexander Sørloth, Oscar Bobb and Antonio Nusa provide plenty of additional firepower.

Iraq, meanwhile, deserve enormous credit for reaching the tournament. The Lions of Mesopotamia navigated a difficult Asian qualifying campaign and have developed a reputation for being well organised and difficult to break down.

However, facing a Norway side packed with Premier League and Champions League talent represents one of their toughest assignments in recent years.

Norway to Win & Over 2.5 Goals

Norway’s attacking strength should be too much for Iraq over the course of 90 minutes.

Solbakken’s side have regularly scored multiple goals against teams ranked outside Europe’s elite and possess one of the most feared centre-forwards in world football. Iraq may frustrate Norway for periods, but the quality gap between the two squads is difficult to ignore.

If Norway get an early breakthrough, the game could quickly open up. Combining a Norway victory with over 2.5 goals looks one of the strongest betting angles.

Erling Haaland Anytime Goalscorer

Few bets at this World Cup are likely to be more popular than backing Erling Haaland to score.

The Manchester City striker has shattered goalscoring records throughout his career and boasts an outstanding international record. Whether from open play, set pieces or penalties, Haaland is Norway’s biggest threat every time he steps onto the pitch.

Against an Iraq defence likely to spend long spells under pressure, opportunities should arrive.

If Norway perform as expected, Haaland will fancy his chances of adding to his remarkable tally for his country.

Score Prediction: Norway 3-0 Iraq
