Canada vs Qatar: World Cup betting preview

Canada and Qatar meet in a pivotal Group B clash on Wednesday night with both sides knowing that victory could prove decisive in the race for a place in the World Cup knockout stages.

After two rounds of matches, Switzerland sit top of the group following their emphatic 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, leaving Canada, Qatar and Bosnia battling for the second qualification spot.

Canada opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia before arriving at this fixture knowing they need a positive result ahead of their final group game against Switzerland. Jesse Marsch’s side possess plenty of attacking quality through Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies and Cyle Larin, but they will be disappointed not to have converted more of their chances in their opening match.

Qatar find themselves in a similar position after drawing 1-1 with Switzerland in their tournament opener. The 2022 hosts produced an organised display against one of Europe’s most consistent international sides and showed they remain capable of competing at this level.

With both teams sitting on one point, defeat would leave qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

Both Teams To Score

This fixture has all the ingredients of an open contest.

Canada have scored in nine of their last 10 competitive internationals and possess plenty of pace and creativity in attacking areas. However, defensive lapses have occasionally prevented them from turning good performances into victories.

Qatar also demonstrated against Switzerland that they can create opportunities against strong opposition. The Gulf nation’s front line possesses enough movement and technical quality to trouble a Canadian defence that looked vulnerable at times against Bosnia.

With both sides needing a win, backing both teams to find the net looks like a strong angle.

Jonathan David Anytime Goalscorer

When Canada need a goal, Jonathan David is usually the man they turn to.

The Lille striker has become one of the most prolific goalscorers in Canadian football history and remains the focal point of Jesse Marsch’s attack. His intelligent movement inside the penalty area and ability to finish from limited opportunities make him Canada’s biggest threat.

Against a Qatar defence that may be forced to take more risks than usual, David should receive chances throughout the match.

If Canada are to secure a crucial victory, there is every chance their star striker will be involved.

Score Prediction: Canada 2-1 Qatar
