Qatar vs Switzerland: World Cup betting preview

The first game in a packed night of football

Qatar and Switzerland get their 2026 World Cup campaigns underway on Saturday night, with the Swiss looking to make a strong start in what many expect to be a tightly-contested Group B.

While Qatar arrive in North America hoping to banish memories of their difficult home World Cup in 2022, Switzerland head into the tournament with genuine confidence after another impressive qualification campaign and a run of consistent performances in major competitions.

The Swiss have reached the last 16 at each of the previous three World Cups and are widely regarded as favourites to progress from a group also containing Canada and Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Qatar have improved significantly since their disappointing showing as hosts four years ago. Julen Lopetegui’s side qualified for the tournament on merit and remain dangerous thanks to the attacking threat of Akram Afif and Almoez Ali.

However, recent results have been a concern, with the Gulf nation struggling for consistency heading into the competition.

Switzerland, meanwhile, have built a reputation as one of international football’s most reliable tournament teams. Murat Yakin’s side have lost just one of their last 14 matches and boast an experienced spine featuring Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji and Gregor Kobel. The Swiss also conceded only two goals during qualification and arrive in excellent shape.

There is a slight historical twist to this fixture. The two nations have only met once before, with Qatar recording a surprise 1-0 friendly victory back in 2018.

However, Switzerland enter this encounter as overwhelming favourites based on recent form and tournament pedigree.

Switzerland to Win & Under 3.5 Goals

The Swiss are favourites for good reason. Qatar are winless in several recent matches, while Switzerland have become incredibly difficult to beat.

The Europeans tend to control games rather than blow teams away, making a Swiss win combined with under 3.5 goals an appealing option. Switzerland have also kept numerous clean sheets over the past 18 months.

Switzerland to Win to Nil

Qatar have struggled for goals recently, failing to score in four of their last five internationals according to pre-match statistics. Switzerland’s defence, marshalled by Akanji and Kobel, should be capable of shutting out the Asian side if they perform to their usual level.

Score Prediction: Qatar 0-2 Switzerland

Qatar possess enough quality to remain competitive for long periods, but Switzerland’s superior organisation, experience and defensive strength should ultimately prove decisive.

Expect the Swiss to control possession, create the better chances and start their World Cup with a comfortable victory.
