Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina: World Cup betting preview

The co-hosts will be hoping to get off to a flying start

Canada begin their home World Cup campaign tonight when they take on Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto in a huge Group B opener.

With the eyes of a nation on them, Jesse Marsch’s side will be desperate to make a statement on home soil and secure what would be Canada’s first-ever win at a men’s World Cup finals. The co-hosts have previously lost all six of their matches across the 1986 and 2022 tournaments, but expectations are considerably higher this time around.

Bosnia, meanwhile, return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 after navigating a difficult qualification route. The Europeans arrive in Canada as underdogs but have built their recent success on organisation, defensive discipline and an ability to grind out results.

The match will be played in Toronto, marking the first men’s World Cup fixture ever staged on Canadian soil. With a packed home crowd expected, the atmosphere should heavily favour the hosts.

Canada head into the tournament on an eight-match unbeaten run and have been particularly impressive defensively, conceding just once across their last five friendly matches. Jonathan David remains their main attacking threat, while the pace of Tajon Buchanan gives them a dangerous outlet on the counter.

Bosnia have also been difficult to beat, but goals have been harder to come by. Reports suggest they have not scored more than once in a match since November 2025, relying instead on a compact defensive shape and experienced figures such as Edin Džeko.

Everything points towards a tight opening game, which is hardly surprising given the pressure of a World Cup opener and the importance of avoiding defeat in what looks a competitive group featuring Switzerland and Qatar.

Under 2.5 Goals

World Cup openers are often cagey affairs and the stats support a low-scoring contest.

Three of Canada’s last eight matches have finished 0-0, while Bosnia’s recent games have generally been tight, low-scoring encounters. Canada have also conceded only once in their last five outings.

Neither side is likely to take unnecessary risks this early in the tournament, making the unders market particularly attractive.

Jonathan David to Score Anytime

Canada’s home advantage should give them the edge, but Bosnia are unlikely to make life easy.

The hosts look stronger across the pitch and possess more attacking quality, but a tense opening game is expected. If anyone will break the deadlock, it could be Juventus striker Jonathan David, who is generously priced at 29/20 with BetWarriors.

Prediction: Canada 1-0 Bosnia and Herzegovina
