At least 17 people were hurt after a vehicle ploughed into crowds celebrating Mexico’s victory, with supporters having packed the streets of Cabo San Lucas and brought traffic to a standstill.
Mexico, led by Raul Jimenez, secured a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic to finish top of their group and book their place in the last 32.
Following the final whistle, large numbers of fans dressed in Mexico’s iconic green shirts poured onto the streets to celebrate the result on home soil before the festivities descended into chaos.
At around 9.45pm local time, crowds spilled onto Lázaro Cárdenas Boulevard in Baja California Sur, leaving several vehicles unable to move through the packed roadway.
Video from the scene appears to show a group of supporters surrounding a black car, with some leaning against the bonnet and pressing up against its windows.
According to local reports, the driver then suddenly accelerated, striking several people before attempting to flee the area.
However, after travelling only a short distance, the vehicle swerved to the left and crashed as supporters ran towards it.
Reports state that the driver was detained at the scene shortly after the incident.
Emergency personnel, including public safety officers, firefighters and civil protection teams, responded quickly and cordoned off the area.
