Argentina vs Austria: World Cup betting preview

Argentina and Austria face off in a fascinating Group J encounter on Monday evening with both nations looking to strengthen their grip on a place in the World Cup knockout stages.

The reigning world champions made a comfortable start to their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Algeria, while Austria also impressed by beating Jordan 3-1 in an entertaining opening fixture.

With both teams sitting on three points, the winner of this match will take a huge step towards qualification and secure top spot in the group.

Argentina once again looked every bit a title contender in their opener. Lionel Scaloni’s side controlled possession, limited Algeria to very few opportunities and showcased the quality that has made them one of the most feared teams in international football. Julián Álvarez continued his excellent form, while Enzo Fernández and Alexis Mac Allister dictated the tempo from midfield.

Austria, however, should not be underestimated.

Ralf Rangnick has transformed the Austrians into one of Europe’s most organised and energetic teams. Their aggressive pressing style caused Jordan all sorts of problems, while attacking talents such as Christoph Baumgartner, Marcel Sabitzer and Michael Gregoritsch offer genuine threat going forward.

This has the potential to be one of the most entertaining matches of the group stage.

Both Teams To Score

Austria are unlikely to sit back and defend for 90 minutes.

Rangnick’s side have built their recent success on front-foot football and have scored in 11 of their last 12 competitive matches. Argentina remain exceptionally strong defensively, but Austria possess enough quality and attacking intent to create chances.

At the other end, the world champions have scored in 17 of their last 18 internationals and boast elite attacking options throughout the squad.

With both teams carrying significant goal threats, backing both teams to score looks like a strong play.

Julián Álvarez Anytime Goalscorer

Julián Álvarez appears ready to become one of the stars of this World Cup.

The Atletico Madrid forward opened his tournament account against Algeria and continues to thrive in Argentina’s fluid attacking system. His movement between defenders and ability to finish from difficult positions make him a constant danger.

Austria’s high-pressing approach could leave space behind their defensive line, exactly the type of scenario where Álvarez excels.

If Argentina are to secure another victory, their number nine looks well placed to add to his tally.

Score Prediction: Argentina 2-1 Austria
