Man Utd Midfield Plans Could Be Derailed by Liverpool’s Surprise Swap Deal

Manchester United’s hunt for Adam Wharton might hit a major snag — and it’s all thanks to Liverpool.

United have been eyeing the Crystal Palace midfielder as a cheaper alternative to Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, whose £100m price tag has cooled talks. But Palace’s summer business could blow up Ruben Amorim’s plans.

The Liverpool Link

Palace defender Marc Guehi is wanted by Liverpool, and The Sun claim a swap deal involving Harvey Elliott is on the table. If that happens, Palace may be far less willing to let Wharton leave — especially if Eberechi Eze is also sold.

Palace’s stance is simple:

  • Sell one of Guehi or Eze → they might entertain bids for Wharton
  • Sell both → Wharton is staying put

Why It Matters for United

Amorim wants more midfield depth after spending big on attackers Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Wharton, 21, fits the bill — but if Liverpool get Guehi via an Elliott swap, Palace will be in no rush to cash in on anyone else.

For now, United’s midfield chase depends on whether Palace’s transfer dominoes fall in their favour — or Liverpool’s.
