Liverpool have confirmed Alexander Isak has undergone surgery after suffering a fractured fibula, ruling the striker out for several months in a major blow to Arne Slot’s plans.
The 26-year-old was injured moments after scoring off the bench in Saturday’s clash at Tottenham, caught by a follow-through challenge from Micky van de Ven. Isak was unable to continue and left the pitch in visible pain. Liverpool later confirmed a successful operation on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture, though no precise return date has been set.
The setback halts what looked like a turning point for Isak following a stop-start start to life at Anfield. Signed for a Premier League-record £125m in the summer, the Sweden international has scored three goals in 16 appearances since arriving from Newcastle and was beginning to show flashes of his quality.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher called the injury “really bad luck,” adding that the challenge itself was understandable given the situation. “It’s probably one of the first glimpses we’ve seen of his real quality in a Liverpool shirt,” he said on Sky Sports.
The injury compounds a tricky period for Isak, who missed parts of pre-season amid uncertainty over his future, trained alone at Real Sociedad before his move, and has battled fitness issues since September. He made his Reds debut in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid and scored his first league goal in November, before netting again at Tottenham.
For Arne Slot, the timing is far from ideal. Mohamed Salah is away at AFCON, Cody Gakpo is injured (though due back next month), while Federico Chiesa and Rio Ngumoha have been used sparingly. Hugo Ekitike, however, has impressed with 11 goals since joining and is set to lead the line in Isak’s absence.
With January approaching, Liverpool may yet move for reinforcements. Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo remains a leading option, though competition is fierce and his £65m release clause could be decisive.
Isak’s injury is a seismic setback—but it may also shape Liverpool’s transfer strategy as the season enters a crucial phase.
