Uruguay vs Cape Verde: World Cup betting preview

Uruguay and Cape Verde meet in a fascinating Group H clash on Saturday night with qualification for the World Cup knockout stages hanging in the balance.

After both teams produced surprise results in their opening matches, the group has been blown wide open. Uruguay were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia, while Cape Verde stunned many observers by securing a goalless draw against Spain.

That means both nations head into matchday two knowing a victory could put them in a commanding position ahead of the final round of fixtures.

For Uruguay, there is pressure to deliver.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side entered the tournament as clear favourites to qualify alongside Spain, but their failure to beat Saudi Arabia has left little margin for error. Federico Valverde, Darwin Nunez and Ronald Araujo remain the key figures, and Uruguay will expect a significant improvement in front of goal after creating several opportunities in their opening match.

Cape Verde, meanwhile, continue to write one of the stories of the tournament.

The tournament debutants frustrated Spain for 90 minutes and showed impressive defensive discipline throughout. Their organisation and work ethic have already earned widespread praise, but facing Uruguay presents another major challenge.

Uruguay to Win to Nil

Cape Verde deserve enormous credit for their draw against Spain, but repeating that defensive performance against another top-quality opponent will be difficult.

Uruguay are one of South America’s strongest defensive teams and rarely concede many chances. Bielsa’s side will likely dominate possession and territory, forcing Cape Verde to spend long periods defending deep.

While the African side have shown they are capable of frustrating opponents, Uruguay’s quality should eventually tell.

A Uruguay victory without conceding looks like a strong betting angle.

Darwin Nunez Anytime Goalscorer

After drawing a blank against Saudi Arabia, Darwin Nunez will be eager to make his mark on the tournament.

The Liverpool striker remains Uruguay’s primary attacking weapon and continues to thrive under Bielsa’s aggressive style of play. His pace, aerial presence and relentless movement make him a constant threat inside the penalty area.

With Uruguay expected to create plenty of opportunities, Nunez looks well placed to get on the scoresheet.

If La Celeste secure the victory they desperately need, there is every chance their star striker will be heavily involved.

Score Prediction: Uruguay 2-0 Cape Verde
