Wayne Rooney urges Man Utd to sign Donnarumma – “Crazy not to”

Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United to make a move for Gianluigi Donnarumma, insisting it would be “crazy” if the club ignored the chance to bring in the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper.

The Italian stopper, still only 26, is expected to leave PSG this summer despite helping them to Champions League glory. Reports suggest both United and Manchester City are monitoring his situation.

United’s current crop of keepers – Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir and veteran Tom Heaton – have all come under scrutiny. Bayindir’s error against Arsenal on the opening weekend only intensified calls for a new No.1, while Onana has been widely criticised for mistakes last season.

Rooney told listeners on his podcast:

“Donnarumma, I think he’s 26, he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world. It would be crazy if Man United don’t go for him.”

The former United captain also dismissed concerns over the Italian’s reliability, adding:

“I don’t think he’s a risk. I saw a stat the other day – errors leading directly to goals. His was zero.”

Manager Ruben Amorim, however, remains publicly supportive of his options, saying after Sunday’s draw with Arsenal that he was “happy with the three goalkeepers” and that his side had shown they can compete at the top level.

With the transfer window still open, United must now decide whether to stick with their current keepers – or heed Rooney’s call and push for a marquee signing.
