Liverpool’s British-record swoop for Florian Wirtz has dominated headlines — but Wayne Rooney says the Reds’ most important summer addition is someone else entirely.
Speaking on Match of the Day, the former England captain — and lifelong Evertonian — surprised viewers by naming Jeremie Frimpong as the Premier League’s most important signing.
“Most important signing? Jeremie Frimpong,” Rooney said, picking him ahead of Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and other big-money arrivals.
Why Frimpong Matters More Than Wirtz
Frimpong’s £30 mill move may have been Liverpool’s cheapest major signing of the summer, but he’s replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold — arguably the highest-profile departure in the Premier League this year.
Rooney believes that role makes Frimpong the key addition:
- Wirtz replaces Dominik Szoboszlai (still at the club)
- Kerkez steps in for Andy Robertson (still at the club)
- Ekitike competes with Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota
- Frimpong fills Alexander-Arnold’s boots — and that’s no small task
With Liverpool tipped by Rooney to retain the title, Frimpong’s ability to slot straight into a defence used to Trent’s creativity could define the Reds’ season.
