England’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers have taken an early hit — Ollie Watkins has been ruled out of the trip to Latvia after picking up a leg injury in the 3–0 win over Wales.
The Aston Villa forward crashed into the post while scoring his side’s opener and was replaced at half-time. Manager Thomas Tuchel initially downplayed the issue, but scans have since confirmed Watkins will not travel with the squad.
“It’s a sore one for Ollie. We’ll assess him properly when we’re back at St George’s, but it’s too soon for Tuesday,” Tuchel told reporters.
The injury hands a recall opportunity to Harry Kane, who has rejoined full training following his own ankle scare. Ivan Toney and Eberechi Eze are also pushing for minutes in Riga.
Watkins’ absence will sting — the 28-year-old has been in electric form for Villa, scoring 9 goals in his last 10 outings across competitions. His movement and work rate have made him a core part of England’s new-look pressing system under Tuchel.
England sit top of their group with maximum points, but Latvia away could still prove tricky without one of their most dynamic attackers.
