Liverpool FC have been urged to make a bold January approach for Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber, as concerns continue to mount over the Reds’ defensive stability.
Despite entering the season as champions, Liverpool have looked uncharacteristically vulnerable at the back, conceding 26 goals in just 18 league matches. Club captain Virgil van Dijk has struggled to rediscover his imperious best, while the long-term absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold has left a noticeable imbalance on the right side.
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock believes Timber would be the ideal solution, praising the Arsenal man’s versatility and reliability across the back line.
“Liverpool need a centre-back and a right-back,” Warnock said. “They have options, but too many of them are injury-prone. You need players who can perform week in, week out — and Timber gives you that.”
Timber has become a key figure under Mikel Arteta, operating effectively at both right-back and centre-back as Arsenal FC push on as Premier League title contenders. His recovery from an ACL injury has only strengthened his reputation, with Warnock hailing him as “the best right-back in the league” for his one-vs-one defending and physical robustness.
The Dutchman recently missed Arsenal’s win over Brighton through injury, but his importance to Arteta’s system makes any potential deal hugely unlikely — particularly to a direct title rival.
Warnock admitted as much, adding: “In an ideal world I’d bring in Timber, but I don’t think Arsenal would allow that. Still, that’s the level of player Liverpool should be targeting.”
With the January transfer window fast approaching, Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcements is clear. Whether they dare test Arsenal’s resolve over one of their most valuable assets remains to be seen — but it would certainly rank among the boldest moves of the winter window.
