The football world is in shock and mourning after Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva were tragically killed in a car accident in Spain. Jota was just 28 years old.
The crash occurred in Zamora after a tyre blowout caused their vehicle to leave the road. Jota had married his partner Rute Cardoso just weeks ago. They shared three children together.
⚽ A talent gone far too soon
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 and became a fan favourite for his relentless energy, technical brilliance and knack for big goals. He helped the Reds to a Premier League title, plus FA Cup and League Cup wins.
The Portuguese Football Federation described him as “much more than an amazing player… respected by all, with infectious joy.”
🖤 Emotional tributes pour in
Cristiano Ronaldo, Jota’s international teammate, wrote:
“It doesn’t make sense. We were just together. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. You will be missed.”
Darwin Núñez shared:
“No words of comfort for so much pain. I’ll always remember you with your smile.”
Jamie Carragher said he was in “a state of shock,” while Steven Gerrard and Jack Grealish paid their respects online. Rafael Nadal, LeBron James, and Diogo Dalot also sent heartfelt tributes.
🇵🇹 A loss for a nation
Portugal’s President called Jota a player who “represented Portuguese football at the highest level”. Prime Minister Luis Montenegro called the news “unexpected and tragic.”
The country — and the wider football community — is united in grief.
🕊 Rest easy, Diogo & Andre
