Liverpool are reportedly preparing a huge proposal to sign Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of next season.
The Reds overhauled their forward line last summer with the arrivals of Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, but the departure of Luis Diaz left Arne Slot short of a natural left-wing option.
Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Rio Ngumoha and Mohamed Salah have all been used in wide roles this season, but none have fully convinced. Gakpo has struggled for consistency, Salah has failed to hit last season’s numbers, while Chiesa has found minutes hard to come by under Slot.
Liverpool identify Williams as key target
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Liverpool have now identified Williams as a serious target and are preparing to trigger his £83m release clause to prise him away from San Mamés.
Williams recently signed a long-term contract extension with Athletic Club running until 2035 and was initially keen to fight for major honours with his boyhood club. However, Athletic have endured a difficult La Liga campaign and currently find themselves stuck in mid-table.
The report claims the 23-year-old is now open to leaving in order to take the next step in his career.
Athletic face tough decision
Athletic Club are reluctant to lose one of their most valuable assets, but Williams’ release clause means the final decision could rest with the player himself should Liverpool formalise their interest.
The Spain international is naturally a left winger but is also comfortable operating on the right, making him an ideal tactical fit for Slot’s system.
Williams has registered five goal contributions in 10 La Liga starts this season and remains a regular starter for Spain under Luis de la Fuente.
Long-term investment for Liverpool
Still only 23, Williams is viewed as one of Europe’s most exciting wide forwards and has consistently impressed with his pace, dribbling ability and direct attacking style.
Liverpool are also monitoring Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, but Williams is seen as a higher-ceiling option with long-term resale value.
A move in January would be difficult to complete, but Liverpool could look to strike a deal either mid-season or next summer as they plan the next phase of Slot’s rebuild.
It remains to be seen whether the Reds will follow through with a formal bid, but Nico Williams is now firmly on Liverpool’s transfer radar.
