Kobbie Mainoo asks for Man Utd loan move amid concerns

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has asked to leave the club on loan before Monday’s transfer deadline – but United have rejected the request.

The 20-year-old is understood to be frustrated over a lack of Premier League minutes, with head coach Ruben Amorim preferring Bruno Fernandes in his position. Mainoo has been an unused substitute in both league fixtures this season, though he did play the full 90 minutes in Wednesday’s shock EFL Cup exit to Grimsby.

Mainoo has made 16 starts in 45 games under Amorim since November but is worried his development could stall, especially with United failing to qualify for Europe. He has three years left on his deal but talks over an extension have stalled.

The midfielder is not seeking a permanent exit and still sees his long-term future at Old Trafford, but he wants assurances about game time. Once a regular under Erik ten Hag, Mainoo’s progress has slowed due to injuries and competition for places.

England boss Thomas Tuchel has not included him in a squad since taking charge, despite Mainoo’s Euro 2024 final appearance under Gareth Southgate.
