Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has spoken out for the first time after being hospitalised and officially diagnosed with pneumonia.
The 47-year-old was absent from the dugout during Newcastle’s emphatic 4-1 win over Manchester United on Sunday, having been admitted to hospital on Friday after feeling unwell for several days.
The club confirmed Howe’s condition earlier today, revealing he remains under medical care as he recovers from the illness. He is expected to miss upcoming Premier League clashes against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, with assistant manager Jason Tindall and coach Graeme Jones set to continue leading the team in his absence.
Despite his condition, Howe has been in touch with his staff. Tindall shared post-match that the boss had been in contact before the United game but chose to leave the in-game decisions to his coaching team.
In a heartfelt statement, Howe thanked the football community for their support:
“A huge thank you to everyone connected with Newcastle United and the wider football community for your messages and warm wishes. They have meant a lot to me and my family.”
“I also want to pay tribute to our incredible NHS and the hospital staff who have treated me. I’m immensely grateful for the specialist care I’m receiving and, after a period of recovery, I look forward to being back as soon as possible.”
Newcastle United also shared a message of support:
“The club continues to extend its best wishes and support to Eddie and his family as he continues his recovery. Get well soon, gaffer.”
What Is Pneumonia?
According to the NHS, pneumonia is a lung infection caused by bacteria or viruses. Symptoms often include coughing, high temperature, chest pain, and difficulty breathing. While many recover in two to four weeks, more severe cases may require hospital care, including antibiotics, fluids, and oxygen support.
Wishing Eddie a full and speedy recovery. 💪
