Ecuador vs Ivory Coast: World Cup betting preview

Let’s see who can keep the pace with Germany…

Group E continues tonight as Ecuador and Ivory Coast meet in what could prove to be one of the most important matches in the race for a place in the World Cup knockout stages.

With Germany expected to top the group after their emphatic opening victory over Curaçao, both Ecuador and Ivory Coast know that three points here would put them in a strong position heading into their remaining fixtures.

Ecuador arrive at the tournament full of confidence after an impressive qualifying campaign. The South Americans have become notoriously difficult to beat in recent years and possess a blend of physicality, organisation and pace that makes them dangerous opponents.

Much of their attacking threat comes through captain Enner Valencia, who remains his country’s all-time leading goalscorer and has a remarkable record at major tournaments..

Ivory Coast, meanwhile, arrive as reigning African champions after their unforgettable AFCON triumph in 2024.

The Elephants have developed into one of the continent’s strongest sides and boast a squad packed with talent from Europe’s top leagues, including Simon Adingra, Sébastien Haller and Evan Ndicka.

Recent form suggests this could be a tightly contested affair. Ecuador have lost just once in their last nine competitive matches, while Ivory Coast have won seven of their previous nine games in all competitions.

Neither side tends to concede many goals, making this one of the most difficult opening-round fixtures to call.

Under 2.5 Goals

Both teams are built on solid defensive foundations and neither manager is likely to take unnecessary risks in a match that could have huge qualification implications.

Ecuador conceded fewer than a goal per game during qualification and have regularly been involved in low-scoring contests.

Likewise, Ivory Coast have kept clean sheets in five of their last eight competitive matches and generally prefer a structured approach against strong opposition.

With the pressure of a World Cup opener and so much at stake, chances could be at a premium. Under 2.5 goals looks one of the standout selections.

Enner Valencia Anytime Goalscorer

When Ecuador need a goal, they usually turn to Enner Valencia.

The veteran striker has scored more than 40 international goals and has consistently delivered on football’s biggest stages.

He famously scored all three of Ecuador’s goals at the 2022 World Cup and remains the focal point of their attack heading into this tournament.

Given his penalty-taking duties and ability to find space in the box, Valencia represents excellent value in the anytime goalscorer market.

Score Prediction: Ecuador 1-1 Ivory Coast
