Canada vs South Africa: World Cup betting preview

The knockout stages get underway tonight as Canada take on South Africa in what promises to be one of the most intriguing ties of the Round of 32.

Both nations have exceeded expectations to reach this stage of the competition and now stand just one victory away from a place in the last 16.

Canada progressed from Group B after finishing second behind Switzerland. Jesse Marsch’s side drew with Bosnia and Herzegovina, defeated Qatar and then earned a valuable point against the Swiss to book their place in the knockout rounds. Throughout the tournament, Canada have looked dangerous going forward, with Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies providing a constant threat.

South Africa, meanwhile, have been one of the surprise packages of the World Cup. Bafana Bafana navigated a difficult group through a combination of disciplined defending, tireless work rate and clinical finishing when opportunities arose.

The pressure is different now, though.

One mistake can end a World Cup campaign, while one moment of brilliance can create history.

That should make for a tense but entertaining contest.

Canada to Qualify

Knockout football is often decided by fine margins, but Canada appear to have the stronger squad on paper.

Marsch’s side have shown throughout the tournament that they can compete physically while also carrying genuine attacking quality. Jonathan David has been among the standout forwards in the group stage, while Davies remains capable of changing a game with a single run.

South Africa deserve enormous credit for reaching this stage, but Canada possess more experience playing against elite opposition and may have slightly more quality in the decisive moments.

Backing Canada to progress, whether in normal time, extra time or penalties, looks the safest route into the tie.

Jonathan David Anytime Goalscorer

Canada’s biggest attacking weapon continues to be Jonathan David.

The striker has been involved in key moments throughout the tournament and remains the player most likely to make the difference in front of goal. His intelligent movement, composure inside the penalty area and ability to find space in tight matches make him a major threat.

Knockout games are often cagey affairs, which places even greater importance on having a clinical finisher capable of converting limited opportunities.

If Canada are to reach the last 16, David looks likely to play a central role.

Canada 2-1 South Africa
