Manchester United could reignite their long-standing interest in Rúben Neves this January, with reports suggesting the Portuguese midfielder may be available for a significantly reduced fee.
Neves, now 28, left Wolves for Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal in the summer of 2023, becoming one of the league’s early marquee signings. However, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season and no extension currently planned, a winter exit is increasingly realistic.
£20m January Deal on the Table
Al Hilal are believed to be open to offers in the region of £20 million, a dramatic drop from the £47m they paid Wolves just two years ago. With the club reluctant to lose Neves for free in the summer, January represents their final chance to cash in.
For Manchester United, that figure makes Neves a far more attainable target than other midfielders on their radar. Players such as Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba are highly rated but would likely command fees north of £100m in the current market.
Premier League Proven Option
Neves would arrive at Old Trafford as a known quantity. During six seasons at Wolves, he made over 250 appearances, captained the side, and played a pivotal role in their rise to and consolidation in the Premier League.
His ability to dictate tempo, strike from distance and offer leadership in midfield could appeal to Ruben Amorim if the United manager decides reinforcements are needed in the middle of the park during the second half of the season.
Strong Form in Saudi Arabia
Despite speculation over his future, Neves has remained a key figure for Al Hilal. He helped the club win the Saudi Pro League title in his debut season and has started the current campaign strongly under new head coach Simone Inzaghi.
Al Hilal remain unbeaten in the league, with Neves contributing goals and consistent performances, including recent strikes in domestic and cup competitions.
Bruno Fernandes Factor
United’s renewed links with Neves come amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding Bruno Fernandes. The club captain has once again been linked with a potential move to Saudi Arabia after previously turning down interest.
Fernandes has admitted he was “hurt” by United’s openness to a possible exit last summer, although he ultimately chose to stay following discussions with Amorim. A midfield reshuffle involving both Portuguese internationals cannot be ruled out.
January Gamble or Smart Business?
At £20m, Neves would represent a rare January opportunity: a Premier League-proven midfielder entering his peak years at a cut-price fee. While not a long-term rebuild signing, he could provide immediate stability, experience and depth in a key area of the pitch.
Whether United decide to move remains to be seen, but as the January window approaches, Rúben Neves is once again a name firmly back in the conversation.
