Ryder Cup set for fiery start as Rahm & Hatton face DeChambeau & Thomas

The Ryder Cup will tee off in explosive fashion on Friday, with Europe’s Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton taking on Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas in the opening foursomes match at Bethpage Black.

Rahm and Hatton forged a successful partnership in Rome two years ago, combining for two victories as Europe regained the trophy. Their reunion signals captain Luke Donald’s intent to make a strong early statement in New York.

“They’re passionate players and natural leaders,” Donald said. “We want to get off to a good start like we did in Rome, but we know the challenge ahead. Having Jon lead us out with Tyrrell is exactly the tone we want.”

The Americans have chosen fire with fire. US skipper Keegan Bradley selected DeChambeau – who delighted fans by leading chants of “USA” in practice – alongside the ever-combative Thomas. Bradley even urged DeChambeau to attempt to drive the green on the opening hole.

“Bryson relishes these moments,” Bradley said. “He thrives on energy and the fans. And Justin is the heartbeat of our team. We wanted a fiery pair to lead us out.”

The morning session will also see Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood reunited against Collin Morikawa and Harris English. Ludvig Aberg partners Matt Fitzpatrick against world No.1 Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley, while Viktor Hovland and Robert MacIntyre face Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.

Donald, who believes every match will be “feisty”, is backing his team to meet the New York crowd head on. “The first tee is pure energy and passion,” he said. “But my guys are ready for it.”

With US President Donald Trump expected to attend later in the day, the atmosphere is certain to be charged. Both captains appear to welcome the heat – ensuring the 2025 Ryder Cup begins with fireworks.
