Liverpool’s interest in Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak appears to be ramping up — and if the Reds do come calling in full force, the Swedish international may not need much convincing.
With Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez both linked with high-profile exits, Liverpool are already exploring their attacking options. Díaz remains a target for Bayern Munich, who saw a £58.6 million (€67.5m) bid rejected this week. Núñez, meanwhile, continues to be courted by Serie A champions Napoli. Amid this uncertainty, new boss Arne Slot is reportedly pushing to bring in elite firepower — and that’s where Isak comes in.
Liverpool Make Move for Isak
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Liverpool have made a “direct approach” to Newcastle over the 25-year-old. The Athletic also reports that the Merseyside giants expressed serious interest in a deal worth around £120 million, though as of now, no formal offer has been submitted and there are no active negotiations between clubs.
Still, it’s clear Isak is admired at Anfield — and the admiration might be mutual.
What Isak Has Said About Liverpool
Speaking earlier this year, Isak made no secret of his respect for Liverpool as both a team and a footballing environment. Reflecting on his clashes with the Reds, he told The Gazette in March:
“I really enjoy the games against Liverpool, because I think they’re not too different to ourselves — a high-pressing team and a direct team, which can lead to many counter-opportunities. That’s the game I like.
“I think I’ve had pretty good success before. I feel good and enjoy playing against them.”
That wasn’t the only time Isak mentioned Liverpool in glowing terms. He also singled out Anfield as one of his favourite stadiums to play in, calling the historic ground “one of the best atmospheres” he’s experienced.
That sort of admiration won’t go unnoticed by the recruitment team at Liverpool, particularly with a potential vacancy in the No. 9 role on the horizon.
Newcastle’s Stance — And Liverpool’s Plan B
Despite Isak’s fondness for Liverpool, Newcastle may dig their heels in. The club has already dismissed significant interest in Isak before, including rejected offers from Chelsea and Arsenal. The Magpies see him as central to their project — and their hefty price tag reflects that.
If they refuse to sell, Liverpool are prepared to pivot. Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt is also under consideration, with Newcastle themselves having seen bids for the Frenchman turned down earlier in the summer.
Why the Move Could Happen
Isak’s contract runs until 2028, so Newcastle hold a strong position. But the growing sense is that the Swede could be ready for a new challenge. After 21 Premier League goals last season, his stock has never been higher. And Liverpool, retooling under a new manager and aiming to stay competitive at the top, could offer him the perfect platform.
The player’s style — direct, intelligent, mobile — fits the high-pressing, transitional system Arne Slot is expected to adopt. His tactical profile, plus his openness to Liverpool’s footballing identity, make this more than just a rumour.
No bid has been made yet — but as the transfer window ticks on, this is one to watch closely.
