Arsenal are on the verge of completing the high-profile signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP, with reports indicating a deal worth up to €70 million is nearing final agreement.
The Premier League club has reportedly settled on personal terms with the 26-year-old forward, who scored a remarkable 54 goals in all competitions last season for Sporting. Talks between the clubs have advanced significantly in recent days, with only the final structure of the fee and potential add-ons left to be finalized.
Sources close to the negotiations suggest the total package could reach €70 million (£59.2 million), including performance-based bonuses.
The deal, once confirmed, would make Gyökeres the most expensive Swedish player in history—surpassing the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimović and Alexander Isak.
The move follows growing tension between the player and Sporting. Gyökeres’s camp reportedly believed there was a verbal agreement allowing him to leave for €60 million. Sporting denied such a clause, prompting the striker to threaten to skip pre-season training if a transfer did not materialize. Sporting have since paused his return to training, further fuelling speculation that a move to the Emirates is imminent.
Gyökeres’s potential arrival marks a significant statement of intent from Arsenal, who have been in the market for a clinical striker to lead their line. Following their failed pursuit of RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško earlier in the summer, Mikel Arteta made Gyökeres his top attacking target. The Gunners struggled for consistency in front of goal last season, particularly after Gabriel Jesus’s injury and a lack of productivity from Eddie Nketiah.
The Swede’s blend of physicality, intelligent movement, and goal-scoring instinct appears tailor-made for Arteta’s system. At 26, he is considered to be entering his prime, and his prolific campaign in Portugal has convinced Arsenal that he can make an immediate impact in the Premier League.
If the deal is completed, Gyökeres would become Arsenal’s second major signing of the summer, following the arrival of Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a deal worth over £50 million. The North London side is clearly bolstering its squad in a bid to close the gap on champions Manchester City after finishing second for the second consecutive season.
While the transfer has yet to be officially announced, all signs point to a formal unveiling in the coming days, barring any last-minute complications.
