The magic is back – and it’s bringing some serious star power with it.

HBO has officially dropped the first wave of casting news for its upcoming Harry Potter reboot, and it’s already sparking major fan reactions online.

Taking us back to Hogwarts with a fresh take on the beloved books, the series will span seven seasons — one for each of J.K. Rowling’s original novels — with a release window currently set for 2026.

Let’s break down who’s donning the robes this time around:

🧙‍♂️ DUMBLEDORE: John Lithgow

Yep, The Crown and 3rd Rock from the Sun legend John Lithgow is taking on the role of the iconic headmaster.

“It’s going to define the final chapter of my career,” Lithgow admitted, after getting the call at Sundance.
Big shoes to fill after Richard Harris, Michael Gambon, and Jude Law — but if anyone has the gravitas, it’s Lithgow.

🧤 HAGRID: Nick Frost

Comedy king Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) is stepping into the boots (and beard) of the half-giant Hagrid, originally played by the late Robbie Coltrane.

“I won’t let you down, Robbie,” he wrote on Instagram. Instant tears.

🧙‍♀️ MCGONAGALL: Janet McTeer

Golden Globe-winner Janet McTeer is taking over the role made famous by Dame Maggie Smith. Expect sharp wit and even sharper Transfiguration skills.

🧹 ARGUS FILCH: Paul Whitehouse

Yes, the Fast Show legend is bringing everyone’s favourite grumpy caretaker back to life. Mrs. Norris, we’re ready.

🧠 PROFESSOR QUIRRELL: Luke Thallon

A rising star in British theatre, Thallon will play the first season’s main villain — or is he just the host for one? 👀

🐍 SNAPE: Paapa Essiedu

Perhaps the boldest casting move yet: Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) steps into the brooding role made iconic by Alan Rickman.
Fans are divided, but there’s no denying Essiedu has the acting chops to pull off a complex, tortured legend.

🎥 What’s Next?

Still no word on the Big Three – Harry, Ron, and Hermione – but HBO is playing this one close to the chest. With the show aiming for a decade-long run, the pressure is real to get it right.

Francesca Gardiner (Succession) is serving as showrunner, with Mark Mylod (Game of Thrones, The Menu) directing multiple episodes.

💬 Twitter’s Already on Fire

“Nick Frost as Hagrid is wild, but Paapa Essiedu as Snape? This finna be a whole new vibe.”
“Great castings but we are still waiting on the big three.”
“All of them have really big shoes to fill.”

Yeah, the fandom has opinions — and we’re here for every magical minute.
